Around Easter, the Umbrian countryside doesn’t just come alive; it practically throws a wild spring party with blossoming trees, blooming gardens, and meadows of wildflowers that look suspiciously like nature’s confetti. Meanwhile, the woods are showing off their buffet of wild bounty, from mushrooms that seem to have grown just to create confusion to asparagus that’s been practicing its runway walk. As the days stretch out like a lazy cat basking in the sun, the hills and fields burst into a colorful fashion show that’s worthy of a standing ovation. It’s the perfect time to visit the stunning villages—like Città della Pieve, Montefalco, Bevagna, Spello, Todi, and Orvieto—which are basically history’s Instagram hotspots. These medieval towns come alive like a caffeinated squirrel, buzzing with concerts, fairs, exhibitions, and food festivals that could make even the most dedicated couch potato want to get up and dance. And if you really want to pamper yourself, why not spend a springtime afternoon at one of the fancy thermal spas or Roman baths nearby? After all, you deserve to relax in style! Easter is such a beloved spring holiday, and it’s heartwarming to see how food plays a central role in the celebrations, especially in Italy. Breakfast comes alive with the special contents of the blessed Easter basket, featuring hard-boiled eggs, new salami, a cheerful glass of wine, savory cheese bread (torta pasquale or torta di formaggio), and the delightful dove-shaped Colomba sweet bread. At lunch, you’ll be treated to an array of egg-based pasta in every form, tender lamb or young goat, vibrant artichokes, fresh asparagus, fennel, and other delightful spring vegetables, along with the first strawberries of the season. Afterwards, it’s a joy to see merrymakers breaking open their hollow chocolate eggs, eagerly uncovering their sweet surprises and enjoying the leftovers for dessert. Our wonderful local eateries create an inviting atmosphere for a traditional Easter lunch, just remember to book early, as they quickly fill with fellow celebrators!
A Good Friday procession through the medieval streets of Assisi allows you to take part in the lively celebrations there as well. In addition, you can view the historic castle and ruins at the Basilica of St. Francis.
Come to Panicale on Easter Monday and participate in the local game of ruzzolone, which involves rolling a 4-kilogram wheel of cheese around the historic town walls. There is music and lots of festive fun after the games, and people love to have a fish dinner at the neighboring Lake Trasimeno.
But perhaps one of the most incredible experiences is visiting Pieve and witnessing the ‘living pictures.’ This tradition involves a group reenacting famous paintings of Christ’s passion and the Easter story. Using costumes, lights, and backdrops, these performances are visually stunning and emotionally powerful recreations of classic masterpieces and give you a new appreciation of the region’s deep cultural roots.
Easter in Pieve is truly a special occasion. You’re in for a double treat! Not only will you experience the atmospheric underground caverns of the Palazzo Orca with the living paintings of Quadri Viventi, but you’ll also have the chance to explore the wonders of the Easter Market. From April 4 to 6, the town’s historic center will once again host one of my favorite farmers’ markets and craft fairs. This vibrant Market of Artisan and Agro-Food Products will feature a delightful array of Italian specialties, with over 50 vendors offering some of Umbria’s finest—truffles, olive oil, wine, and saffron—as well as Norcia’s top-quality charcuterie and Trasimeno’s lentils. Additionally, there will be tasty treats from as far south as Puglia, Calabria, and Sardinia. You can enjoy the festivities from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
This beautiful tradition of living paintings has been celebrated for over 30 years in Città della Pieve. Every year, the Terziere Borgo Dentro district (one of the three districts into which the town is divided) reenacts the Passion of Jesus, known as I Quadri Viventi (the living paintings or tableau). The tableau follows the story of Christ’s crucifixion, including The Last Supper, The Garden of Gethsemane, The Flagellation, The Pity on the Dead Christ, and The Resurrection, all brought to life in the evocative underground cellars of the Palazzo Orca. Here, through artistic lighting (electric lights and candles), a poignant soundtrack, and a series of carefully arranged living tableaux, the evangelical scenes are re-created into a moving and emotional atmosphere with a strong emotional impact. The 40 live figures remain still throughout the event, creating an atmosphere filled with intense emotion and powerful impact. This is a challenging task but one that locals carry out with great dedication and love. This year’s theme also pays tribute to the ‘Divine Painter,’ Peter di Cristoforo Vannucci, on the 500th anniversary of his death. Pietro di Cristoforo Vannucci, also known as Il Perugino, was one of the most influential Italian painters of his time. To learn more about his life, check out my post here: IL Perugino.
Whenever I have visited this incredible event before, it has felt like stepping into a religious painting, maybe a masterpiece by Caravaggio or Perugino. Thanks to the skillful play of light and shadow, the meticulously crafted costumes, and the intense facial expressions of the participants.
All this hard work and attention to detail make the ‘I Quadri Viventi’ one of the most moving and unforgettable events in the Città della Pieve calendar, and one I’d say you shouldn’t miss.
Take advantage of the warm springtime by spending Easter at Città della Pieve. And with a plethora of great restaurants, galleries, artisanal markets, vineyards, and excellent accommodations, including our picturesque Grove Cottage, the town really does offer something for everyone.
